Twenty-five jobs will be created in Windsor if plans to build a new 50 bedroom family hotel are approved by the Royal Borough. The hotel is the brainchild of Tudor Marsden-Huggins who recently inherited the Petrol Station at 437 – 441 St Leonards’ Road (“Last Petrol before the M4”).
The hotel will offer affordable family accommodation for those visiting both Legoland and Windsor Castle. Mr Marsden-Huggins projects the new hotel will bring in £2.66m a year to the town, including the direct benefit of jobs and the estimated £1m spent by daytrippers who will now be able to stay overnight.
Reducing day-tripping will also move traffic from peak times to off-peak in a heavily congested part of town.
The twenty-five jobs will be a mixture of full and part-time positions. As with any hotel, the positions will be at all levels from management to school leavers. There will be an apprenticeship scheme to ensure local young people, including those with few qualifications, have an opportunity to enter the world of work at a business close to home.
Ever since 1947 the site had been leased to a tenant. This was as a result of the death – aged just 33 – of Mr Marsden-Huggins grandfather, Cllr Marsden Huggins. In 2014 the tenant went into receivership, forcing the Marsden-Huggins family to seek an alternative use.
Plans for a hotel were drawn up because Windsor Visitor Survey had suggested the town lacked family accommodation. The Royal Borough also has a policy to boost hotel room numbers, in recognition of the problem visitors face in locating affordable accommodation.
The hotel project will also fund the significant cost of the decommissioning of the 80-year-old petrol storage tank located underground.
Tudor Marsden-Huggins said: “I am delighted at the thought of creating 25 jobs for Windsorians, and bringing something to the town that is going to contribute to the local economy. My family has always been attached to this site, as several generations of my family are buried in the cemetery behind it.
“In 1947 we were unable to keep running our business because of my grandfather’s untimely death. But now there is an opportunity for me to right that wrong. I hope local people will get behind this plan, together we can create an opportunity to maximise the local benefit of both Legoland and the Castle. We are losing millions when people are unable to stay the night here for lack of hotel space.”
The application is expected to come before the Windsor Development Control Panel in November.
